e-Shram Card Apply Online 2026 – Eligibility, Benefits & Status Check Guide

India has over 30 crore unorganised workers — domestic helpers, construction labourers, gig workers, street vendors, drivers, farmers, fishermen. The e-Shram card is the government's flagship social security database for them. Over 30 crore e-Shram registrations have already been done. Holding an e-Shram card gives you a 12-digit Universal Account Number (UAN), free accident insurance worth ₹2 lakh, and acts as a gateway to many central and state welfare schemes. Here's the 2026 step-by-step guide.

What Is the e-Shram Card?

Launched on 26 August 2021 by the Ministry of Labour & Employment, the e-Shram portal (eshram.gov.in) creates a National Database of Unorganised Workers (NDUW). Each registered worker gets a permanent e-Shram card with a unique UAN, valid for a lifetime. The card is portable across India.

Examples of eligible workers: agricultural labourers, fishermen, MGNREGA workers, construction workers, street vendors, domestic workers, tailors, beedi workers, ASHA/Anganwadi workers, gig & platform workers (Swiggy, Uber, Ola, Zomato, Urban Company), salt workers, brick-kiln workers, leather workers and many more.

Linking e-Shram with PM-SYM Pension

PM Shram Yogi Maan-dhan (PM-SYM) is a voluntary pension scheme for unorganised workers earning up to ₹15,000/month. Contribute ₹55 to ₹200 monthly (depending on age 18-40), and the government contributes an equal amount. After 60 years, get a guaranteed monthly pension of ₹3,000. Link your e-Shram card with PM-SYM at a CSC or eshram.gov.in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is e-Shram card free?
Yes, registration and download of e-Shram card is completely free, whether you do it yourself online at eshram.gov.in or through a CSC operator. The Ministry of Labour has clarified that no fee should be collected for e-Shram registration. If a CSC operator demands money, it is an unofficial charge and you can complain to the district nodal officer or the CSC helpline. Many states issue the e-Shram card on spot in just 10-15 minutes. The card is valid for life and does not need renewal.
What is the difference between e-Shram and EPFO?
EPFO covers organised sector employees whose employer deducts 12% of basic salary as Provident Fund. e-Shram is for the opposite group — unorganised workers who don't have PF, gratuity, ESIC or a formal employer. The two are mutually exclusive. If you join an EPFO-registered company, your e-Shram card becomes inactive (your benefits then come from EPFO/ESIC). If you leave that job and return to unorganised work, you can reactivate your e-Shram profile and continue benefits.
When does the ₹2 lakh accident insurance start?
The ₹2 lakh accident insurance under PMSBY is active from the day your e-Shram registration is approved. There is no waiting period and no premium to pay (the government covers it for e-Shram registered workers). In case of accidental death, your registered nominee receives ₹2 lakh; for permanent total disability, ₹2 lakh to you; for partial permanent disability, ₹1 lakh. Claim is filed at the nearest bank where your Aadhaar-seeded account exists, with a copy of the FIR, post-mortem (if applicable), and the e-Shram card.
Will I get money in my account every month after e-Shram registration?
No, e-Shram registration alone does not guarantee a monthly DBT (direct benefit transfer). e-Shram is a database that makes you visible to many central and state welfare schemes. Specific DBTs depend on those scheme rules. During COVID-19, the central government gave ₹1,000-₹3,000 one-time transfers to e-Shram cardholders. States like UP gave Rs 1,500 quarterly to many registered workers. The PM-SYM pension after 60 years is the most reliable long-term financial benefit, but it requires you to contribute ₹55-200 monthly.
Can gig workers like Swiggy/Ola drivers register on e-Shram?
Yes — gig and platform workers (Swiggy, Zomato, Ola, Uber, Urban Company, BlinkIt, etc.) are explicitly eligible for e-Shram. The Code on Social Security 2020 recognises them as a separate category. Under the proposed Social Security Fund (5% mandatory contribution from aggregator companies), gig workers will receive additional health and life cover. Until that is fully rolled out, gig workers should register on e-Shram to claim PMSBY, PM-SYM and state schemes. Choose "Online Aggregator Worker" as occupation during registration.
